There are about a hundred different destinations to explore aboard Marella ships. As the newest member of the Marella Cruises family, Marella Voyager’s facilities are fresh out of the wrapper. It set sail for the first time in June 2023 with a bar and restaurant offering that counts up to 27, as well as an indoor cinema, a pool deck – complete with a swimming pool and whirlpools – and a big show lounge. There are plenty of places where you can take in the sea views, too, from the mini golf course at the top of the ship to The Veranda, where cosy Balinese beds point towards the big blue. Thomson Cruises aimed an effect on the British market just like Carnival did in the USA.

Its fleet reflects this make-up with four family-friendly ships and one adults-only; although specific adults-only sailings are offered across its entire fleet. Since then, the cruise brand has continued to build on its base of wrap-around holidays largely based on flights with the conglomerate’s in-house airline TUI Airways and its own hotels to offer an extensive programme of cruises and stays. In April 2019, Marella Cruises introduced its first adults-only ship, the 1,814-passenger Marella Explorer 2. By removing areas previously dedicated to families, the line has cleverly created more spaces aimed squarely at adults -- with a total of 19 bars and restaurants onboard -- including four new-to-the-line venues. One year later, in 1880, it was the fifth-largest city in the country after Plovdiv, Varna, Ruse and Shumen.

Deck 11 is the hub for daytime action, being both the pool deck (complete with bar, snack bar and stage) and where you’ll find The Kitchens – the busiest area of the ship for breakfast and lunch times. Adults seeking peace away from the bustle can slip into the Oceans Spa on Deck 11 or ascend to The Veranda on Deck 14, the only real kid-free area and certainly the quietest. Different ages tend to coexist happily throughout the ship, although we were sailing outside of UK school holidays. With a large selection of destinations and itineraries, Marella Cruises may show you the whole world.

Thomson Dream (Marella Dream) joined the fleet in spring 2010 being long-term chartered from Costa Cruises. There’s a welcome return of many of Marella Cruises' food staples, from the likes of premium dining Surf & Turf and Kora La to the popular poolside grab-and-go Snack Shack. The biggest dining development has been replacing the traditional buffet with food-court-style The Kitchens, offering an impressive choice of eight distinctive stations. We found food quality generally above-par and with daily variations on each theme.

Within this cohort are first-time cruisers who see Marella as the springboard to ocean-going holidays, either sticking with the line or experimenting with other cruise brands once they gain their sea legs. Unusually for a British line, Marella does not sail from UK ports, preferring instead to focus on cruises with ships based in a varied line-up of popular destinations from the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands to the Red Sea and Florida. According to modern records, 39,551 dwellings were constructed until 1949, 119,943 between 1950 and 1969, 287,191 between 1970 and 1989, 57,916 in the 90s and 102,623 between 2000 and 2011. Until 1949, 13,114 buildings were constructed and between 10,000 and 20,000 in each following decade.[114] Sofia's architecture combines a wide range of architectural styles, some of which are aesthetically incompatible. These vary from Christian Roman architecture and medieval Bulgarian fortresses to Neoclassicism and prefabricated Socialist-era apartment blocks, as well as newer glass buildings and international architecture. A number of ancient Roman, Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian buildings are preserved in the centre of the city.

Night owls won’t mind cabins aft cabins on Deck 8 that sit above the Squid & Anchor pub, where there can be music past midnight. Noise and footfall around the kids’ club on Deck 9 aft might cause annoyance to cabins close by, especially during school holidays. Half a dozen cabins also have restricted picture window views on forward Deck 4, so check the Marella Voyager deck plan beforehand if this would be an issue. The TUI line has revealed that in summer 2023 it will be offering three brand new USA itineraries onboard Marella Discovery, which includes ports of call and overnight stays to the likes of New York, Miami and Tampa. Marella Cruises has revealed it will be getting a brand new cruise ship for families, complete with pools, all-inclusive restaurants and even a secret Speakeasy bar.
The Glass House conservatory area, where the indoor pool is housed, serves Spanish-style tapas and hosts a hot-stone dining experience. Like other Marella ships, Explorer 2 has a large pool on the main deck, bordered by whirlpools and private cabanas that can be hired for the day or the week. Summer often sees Marella ships based in Palma, Dubrovnik and Corfu Town while in winter they can usually be found in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Aqaba in Jordan, plus Jamaica and Barbados, from where they also sail to Central America. It has established a reputation, mirroring its parent company, for good value flight-inclusive packages with prices encompassing traditional cruise extras, such as gratuities and drinks. As the sea-going arm of the TUI Holidays giant, it’s not surprising that Marella Cruises carries much the same vibe – giving it a slightly different feel to regular cruise brands. There's a constant reminder onboard of the value-for-money you get with a Marella cruise.

During the decline of the Roman Empire, the city was raided by Huns, Visigoths, Avars and Slavs. In 809, Serdica was incorporated into the Bulgarian Empire by Khan Krum and became known as Sredets. In 1018, the Byzantines ended Bulgarian rule until 1194, when it was reincorporated by the reborn Bulgarian Empire.
Following hot on the heels of Marella Discovery, which joined Thomson (now Marella) Cruises in 2016, Marella Discovery 2, reinforces the sea change that is steadily transforming this fleet. Marella's summer 2025 program also introduces 10x cruise-and-land packages providing access to 200+ hotels in destinations like Palma, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Cyprus. The adults-only ship Marella Explorer 2 is homeported in La Romana (starting on Christmas Eve/Dec 24, 2024) for a series of Caribbean roundtrips.
The company's older vessels are chartered from Holland America Line and Celestyal Cruises. Marella's new fleet consists of TUI-owned ships formerly owned and operated by Royal Caribbean and TUI Cruises. Since 2015, the National Art Gallery, located in the former royal palace, the National Gallery for Foreign Art (NGFA) and the Museum of Contemporary Art – Sofia Arsenal were merged to form the National Gallery. The crypt of the Alexander Nevsky cathedral is another branch of the National Gallery. It holds a collection of Eastern Orthodox icons from the 9th to the 19th century. After World War II and the establishment of a Communist government in Bulgaria in 1944, the architectural style was substantially altered.
Marella Voyager was originally built for Celebrity Cruises and launched in 1997 before joining TUI Cruises to cater for the German market. In 2023, Marella launched its extended foray into US waters with a ship based at Port Canaveral for the first time, debuting three new itineraries that feature New York and South Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas, and Florida and the Caribbean. Having come into existence as part of the much-beloved Thomson Holidays in 1995 when it was known as Thomson Cruises, the line became Marella (Celtic for “shining sea”) in 2017 when Thomson adopted the name of its German parent company TUI. As a result, the ship is extremely well suited to couples of any age or groups of friends looking to cruise together. We saw many younger couples on our sailing, though the age ranges from twentysomethings up to retirees. Being an adults-only ship, Marella Explorer 2 is not suitable for families -- so don't expect any of the frivolities that are often geared towards younger passengers -- nor is it suitable for anyone looking for a full enrichment programme.
Voyager shares a number of similarities with Marella Explorer and Marella Explorer 2 as they are also both former Celebrity and TUI ships. A key Marella focus is its cruise-and-stay programme, featuring more than 200 TUI hotels across eight destinations, ranging from the premium Platinum collection to their more authentic “Small and Friendly” properties, with the variety of choice being ramped up for 2024. The Mediterranean has long been Marella’s summer mainstay while the Canaries, Caribbean and the Red Sea are established winter haunts. The app is free of charge and, as it is hosted on the ship's own network, it will open on any browser, which means passengers don't have to download it or pay for Wi-Fi to access it. However, Navigate comes into its own for booking extras such as spa treatments, excursions and speciality restaurants.
There are two port facilities in San Juan -- one is a 10-minute ride, close to the airport, called the Pan American terminal, while the main cruise terminal (Piers 1, 3 and 4) is just a short walk from downtown Old San Juan. A 10- to 15-minute walk will get you to most restaurants and attractions (about 25 minutes to El Morro). At the terminal itself, local vendors usually set up stands selling knick-knacks as souvenirs. Otherwise, the immediate port area can be very commercial with a mall, ice cream shops and chain stores like Domino's and Senor Frog's. Puerto Rico has often been called one of the best Caribbean islands for foodies, and the focal point of all that delicious cuisine is San Juan. Try some tapas at a local cafe, or go all out with a waterfront dining experience at a fine restaurant.
Amazing experiences coming soon
Ships arrive in San Juan as early as noon and sail late in the evening. Trek up the long sidewalk leading past the gorgeous green lawns that stretch out on either side of Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly referred to as El Morro. The lawns provide a gorgeous base to the stately standing fort at the top of the gently sloping hill, with the ocean sparkling all around it. Informational signs spread out around the fort will enlighten you about the history of El Morro and how it played a strategic military role for many centuries. More days means more to discover, with extension packages you can add before or after your Viking cruise or cruisetour.

The beach is shared by a strip of premium hotels and features several restaurants. Parasailing, Jet Skiing and other water sports are available, and many consider Isla Verde Beach among the Caribbean's best urban beaches. While relatively small and at times a bit crowded, Condado Beach extends for several miles east of downtown and is a short taxi ride from Old San Juan. El Yunque National Forest is one of several natural attractions found across the greater San Juan region, and cultural attractions include rum distilleries offering tours and tastings. San Juan attracts ships from across cruising's various categories, due in large part to its rich colonial history and fascinating combination of African, Caribbean and European cultures that are expressed in cuisine, the arts and music. Its location in the northeastern Caribbean near the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands gives it a mix of Caribbean, American, and European influences. Adding to that cultural background is the history of the indigenous tribes who once lived here, African slaves who were brought to the island, and the colonial past that brought the Spanish, who built great forts and settled the town of San Juan in 1521.
